It has been noted that the Chinese government is reviewing the introduction of its online filtering software required for all new private computers being sold in the country. It was to be updated constantly by government agencies that are responsible to censor the online content including internet gambling and online casino games. The delay was revealed few hours before the deadline for commencement.
Translated as the ‘Green Dam’, the Chinese developed software is depicted as protection from unsuitable material for its citizens from the internet. There have been several protests that were lodged against the changes of the filtering software by global organizations and governments who call the Chinese government move to prohibit internet liberty and freedom a violation of their rights. Those who have evaluated the program say that it also contains a code to sort out objectionable material considered by the government. Two US business officials have sent the Chinese officials a communication stating their concerns that the proposal will create possible trade obstruction. Industrial units have been alarmed that the software might also cause security issues.
A spokesperson from the BDA China Ltd, one of Beijing’s research firms have speculated that they think the cost of the move from trade resistance and generally a public affair black eye was becoming clearer to the government. He stated that the delay would get them out of the study of the international media and business.
A Chinese blogger notes that they have used the word ‘delay’ instead of claiming to have seized the plan, and adds that he thinks that it is possible that the government could still implement their policy and install this software on personal computers that would filter information people are able to view… calling it an intermediary victory! Categorizing internet content is a very sensitive subject matter in China.
