President Obama is caught in the debacle of the stock market and it was apparent in his comments in which he called upon people not to travel to Vegas in order to handle the tough economic times. This is not the first time that he has irked the wrath of the Las Vegas casino games operators; he had made similar controversial statements on Vegas last year. This comes at a juncture when the casino operators are feeling the melting point of the economic downturn while trying to confront it in their own ways.
Earlier while speaking to a bunch of high school students President Obama quoted that it is essential to tighten the belts on spending in tough times. He also said that one should not blowout their cash in Vegas if one is trying to save for college tuition.
Las Vegas Casino strip has about 32 casinos and the state depends heavily on gaming revenue. The casinos and the local tourist industry were hit the hardest during this economic slump. Unemployment has reached highest peaks when compared to the average rate in the US. Only in recent months there were signs of recovery back to normal business. Even Obama’s strong supporter Harry Reis the Senate Majority Leader denounced Obama’s remarks on Las Vegas. Already Reid has only 1 in 3 supports from the state voters and cannot risk his political career as he tries to position himself better against his opponents in the coming election bid. Reid has remarked that Obama should stop his nefarious comments on Vegas and stop dictating on where people should spend their money.
Shelley Berkley the house representative also took the side of Senator Reid while saying that Obama should stop picking on Vegas and let people to make their own decisions on spending. Obama quickly apologized to Senator Reid in his response letter saying that Las Vegas is one of the greatest destinations in USA and his hopes are that greatest numbers will visit the capitol of gambling.
